The first batch of young men who completed rehabilitation under the Boy Child Programme run by the Office of the Spouse of the Deputy President has graduated.
They were struggling with drug, alcohol, and substance misuse before they volunteered to reform.
A total of 85 males were placed in a three-month rehabilitation program at Timau, Meru County, and Donholm, Nairobi County.
The jubilant men arrived at the Deputy President’s official mansion dressed in suits, a change from how they looked three months ago.
Pastor Dorcas Rigathi, who spoke during the graduation, said her office will carry out the program across the 47 counties in the coming days. Sixty-five of the graduates were from Meru, with the remaining 18 being from Donholm, Nairobi.
Pastor Dorcas also plans to establish a health village that will include all elements of living to aid in rehabilitation.
She also said that her office has received over 2,000 requests from young people across the country seeking placement in rehabilitation initiatives.
“My office has a record of more than 2,000 individuals who wish to undergo rehabilitation. Our approach to rehabilitation incorporates various forms which include inpatient,” she said.
Pastor Dorcas is also hosting a health camp at the ASK Jamhuri Grounds, while 50 others are undertaking an inpatient rehabilitation course in Limuru.
A community-integrated rehabilitation initiative is also in place in the counties of Bomet and Mombasa.
More than 1,000 graduands were tested during the screening process, with 533 expressing a wish to be taken for rehabilitation.
