The world is mourning the loss of Craig, one of Africa’s last remaining super tuskers, who passed away peacefully at the age of 54 on January 3, 2026.
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) confirmed the death, describing Craig as a “gentle giant and a super tusker known to the world,” and highlighting his passing as a significant loss to Kenya’s wildlife heritage.
Born in January 1972 to the matriarch Cassandra of the CB family, Craig was renowned for his immense, ground-sweeping tusks, each weighing over 45 kilograms (100 lbs).
His calm and dignified presence endeared him to visitors and researchers alike, making him a living ambassador for Amboseli National Park.
“Craig was deeply loved for his remarkably calm nature, often pausing patiently as visitors photographed and filmed him,” stated KWS.
Craig’s long life was a testament to dedicated conservation efforts, including continuous monitoring, anti-poaching measures, habitat management, and community stewardship.
He fathered multiple calves, ensuring his powerful bloodline and gentle character will continue across generations.
In 2021, his global recognition led to his adoption by East African Breweries Limited (EABL) through the Tusker brand.
His legacy indicates the critical importance of protecting these magnificent creatures and their habitats for future generations.
