Al Shabaab terror group
The Kenyan security forces have killed 11 Al-Shabaab militants during an intelligence-led operation targeting a suspected terrorist camp near the Kenya-Somalia border.
In a statement on Monday, the Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) said the operation, conducted by the Special Operations Group (SOG) with aerial support, targeted an Al-Shabaab makeshift camp believed to have been hosting about 30 fighters.
According to CTP, intelligence indicated that the militants were preparing to launch a terrorist attack on one of the border villages in Mandera County.
“An intelligence-led operation was carried out on an Al-Shabaab makeshift camp near the Kenyan border by a SOG team.
“The ground assault with aerial support was launched on the terrorists numbering about 30 fighters who were preparing to carry out a terror attack in one of the border villages in Mandera County,” read the statement.
The assault, which was carried out in the early hours of the morning, resulted in the deaths of 11 suspected terrorists, while seven others sustained serious injuries.
During the operation, SOG officers recovered three PKM machine guns and approximately 409 rounds of ammunition.
The surviving militants reportedly fled across the border into Somalia following the assault.
“The early morning assault resulted in the elimination of 11 terrorists and serious injuries to 7 extremists. 3 PKM guns and about 409 rounds of ammunition were recovered. The terrorists retreated into Somalia,” CTP added.
This comes days after an Al-Shabaab commander was captured during a military operation conducted by Somali special forces near the Kenya-Somalia border.
The operation was carried out in Baghdad town, about 42 kilometres outside Hosingow in Somalia’s Sub Sector Central.
The commander was arrested alive during the counter-terrorism operation, while three other suspected Al-Shabaab militants were killed.
