KDF

Three Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruits have died during a training exercise at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School (DFRTS) in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

In a statement on Friday, KDF said the three recruits developed medical complications while participating in a routine endurance exercise and were rushed to Eldoret Regional Hospital, where they succumbed.

“The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) is deeply saddened to announce the tragic loss of three recruits during a scheduled training activity at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School (DFRTS) in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, on 29th January 2026.

“The recruits developed medical complications while participating in a routine endurance exercise. Immediate medical assistance was administered by on-site medical personnel, after which the affected recruits were evacuated to Eldoret Regional Hospital for advanced medical care. Regrettably, they were pronounced dead despite concerted efforts by the attending medical teams,” KDF stated.

KDF said the next of kin have been formally notified, and the military is providing the necessary support and assistance to the affected families.

KDF also extended its condolences to the families, loved ones, fellow recruits, and colleagues of the deceased during this difficult time.

Further, KDF announced it has launched investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident

“A thorough investigation has been initiated in accordance with established military procedures to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The findings will inform any necessary measures to enhance the safety and welfare of personnel undergoing training,” KDF added.
