Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced that 355 individuals were arrested during the Thursday, June 25, protests.
Speaking during a presser, Murkomen said Nairobi recorded the highest number of arrests at 161, followed by Kajiado with 123 and Kiambu with 36.
Other arrests were made in Murang’a (12), Bungoma (9), Meru (6), Laikipia (5), and Machakos (3). No arrests were reported in the North Eastern, Nyanza, and Coast regions.
CS Murkomen noted that the suspects would be arraigned in court to face charges including robbery, vandalism, road obstruction, and attempted theft.
“They will be brought to court to face various charges of robbery, vandalism, road obstruction, and attempted stealing,” Murkomen stated.
CS Murkomen said the country did not witness widespread incidents of looting, vandalism, skirmishes, or injuries, describing the day as a demonstration of political maturity and respect for constitutional rights.
“I would like to commend all Kenyans for heeding the Government’s call to maintain peace and go about their daily activities. No widespread cases of looting, vandalism, skirmishes or injuries were reported in relation to today’s demonstrations,” Murkomen said.
The Interior CS further commended security agencies for what he termed their professionalism in maintaining law and order throughout the demonstrations and also thanked media houses that reported the events responsibly.
“I commend our security agencies for their commitment and dedication to maintaining law and order. They acted with utmost professionalism and responded promptly to concerns raised by wananchi,” he said.
Murkomen also disclosed that an assistant chief from Kariti Sub-Location in Murang’a County, Anthony Gathungu, was injured after being attacked by a group attempting to erect a barricade in Kandara.
The Interiro CS said the administrator was treated at Kagunduini Health Centre and later discharged in fair condition.
