Six people have been confirmed dead after a bus in which they were travelling was involved in a road accident near Fort Tenan along the Londiani-Muhoroni road.
The accident occurred on Tuesday, January 6, after a Uwezo bus travelling to Busia rammed into the rear of a truck.
Kericho County police commander James Ngetich confirmed the accident, saying the two vehicles were heading towards the Kisumu direction when the accident occurred.
Five passengers and the bus driver died on the spot, while 30 other passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to various hospitals in the county for medical attention.
“The driver of the bus lost control of the vehicle before colliding with the truck. The driver and five passengers died immediately. Thirty passengers sustained injuries of varying degrees,” said Ngetich.
Photos of the accident seen by KDRTV showed the front section of the bus was completely mangled.
The morning accident temporarily paralysed transport along the busy road connecting Kericho and Kisumu Counties.
The accident comes a day after 10 people perished in a road accident at Karai area in Naivasha along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
The road crash occurred on Monday, January 5, after a Greenline bus collided with a 14-seater matatu belonging to Nanyuki Cabs Sacco.
The bus was travelling from Nakuru to Nairobi, while the matatu was heading in the opposite direction when the accident happened.
Seven people, including two minors, died at the scene, while three others later succumbed to their injuries while receiving treatment in the hospital.
Several other passengers sustained injuries and were taken to Naivasha District Hospital for medical attention.
