6 Killed After Matatu, Trailer Collide Along Nakuru-Eldoret Highway

At least six people have been killed and five others injured after being involved in a grisly road accident along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.

The tragic accident occurred at about 8:30 pm on Friday, July 3 night in the Nyanja area of Kuresoi North Sub-County, Nakuru County.

The road crash involved a 14-seater matatu which collided head-on with an oncoming trailer.

Kuresoi North Sub-County Police Commander John Kimutai, who confirmed the accident, said the trailer, which was travelling towards Nakuru, reportedly swerved from its lane before colliding with the matatu, which had 11 passengers on board.

Five people, including the matatu driver, died on the spot, while the sixth victim succumbed to injuries while receiving treatment at Londiani Sub-County Hospital.

“The accident involved a Toyota Hiace belonging to Eldoret Crossroads. It had 11 passengers on board. The fatalities are all male adults. Three people suffered serious injuries and were rushed to Londiani Sub-County Hospital. The truck driver sustained minor injuries,” Kimutai said.

The bodies of the deceased were moved to the mortuary pending identification and post-mortem examinations.

Meanwhile, the injured passengers were taken to Londiani Sub-County Hospital to receive immediate treatment.

The accident comes weeks after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revealed that over 2,150 lives have been lost in road accidents since the beginning of the year.

Speaking on Monday, June 15, NTSA Director General Nashon Kondiwa said the majority of people killed in road crashes are pedestrians.

“We have 2,150 people who died on the roads this year, which is an increase of around 11 percent from last year, and of these, around 836 are pedestrians.

“They form the majority, followed by motorcyclists; we have 188 drivers who have died on the road,” said Kondiwa.
