6 Killed, Several Injured After Bus Rams Into Trailer Along Mombasa Road

Six people have been confirmed dead and several injured after a bus collided with a trailer along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway in Machakos County.

The tragic accident occurred at around 1:50 a.m on Tuesday, July 7, near the Kapiti area in Athi River sub-county.

Preliminary reports indicate that a lorry travelling from Mombasa towards Nairobi collided with an oncoming lorry, causing the second vehicle to lose control and crash head-on into a Tahmeed bus travelling in the opposite direction.

Kalama Sub-County police commander Patrick Gaitirira, who confirmed the crash, said six people perished on the spot.

The deceased include the driver of the first lorry and the bus driver, who died alongside four passengers who were in the bus.

“This morning we had a fatal road traffic accident that occurred at around 1.00 am. It involved three vehicles, two trailers and a bus,” Gaitirira said.

Passengers who sustained injuries during the accident were rushed to Machakos Level Five Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the deceased were taken to the hospital mortuary pending post-mortem examinations.

The wreckage of the accident was towed to Kyumbi Police Station as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.

This comes days after six people were killed and five others injured in another grisly road accident involving a 14-seater matatu and a trailer at Kamara in Mau Summit along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.

The accident occurred on Friday, July 4, in the Nyanja area of Kuresoi North Sub-County after the matatu travelling from Nakuru towards Eldoret collided with an oncoming trailer.

The bodies of the six victims were ferried to Molo Mortuary pending identification and a post-mortem.

Two survivors sustained serious injuries and were rushed to the Londiani Sub-County Referral Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
