7 Explosive Devices Intercepted Under Nyatike Bridge Ahead of President Ruto’s Migori Visit

Panic gripped Migori County as police intercepted seven explosive devices strategically placed under the River Kuja Bridge along the busy Migori-Sori Road on the evening of Monday, December 15th 2025.

The discovery occurred barely a day before President William Ruto was set to use the same road for his anticipated visit to the region, including attending the Piny Luo Festival at Rongo University and touring other sites.

Nyatike County Criminal Investigation Officer Bernard Wamalwa confirmed the discovery, explaining that a passerby first spotted a “strange wire connected under the bridge” and promptly alerted authorities.

The devices were identified as industrial emulsion and watergel explosives, typically used in mining, quarrying, and construction due to their water-resistant properties and design for safety blasting.

However, authorities strongly suspect malicious intent given the unusual arrangement of the explosives. “We suspect someone wanted to destroy the bridge because the way they were planted was very unusual,” Wamalwa staed adding, “People here know that if this bridge is destroyed, transport from Migori to Soni is paralysed. Maybe someone wanted a tender”.

Nyatike sub-county police commander Juma Londo also confirmed the incident, stating the explosive was successfully disarmed and the area cordoned off for further investigation.

The incident heightened fears among locals, who reported an increase in criminal activities, including attacks on road users, particularly after dark, on the very bridge. Residents like Bornface Oketch expressed concern, stating, “Our lives feel endangered now more than ever”.

Despite the security scare, President Ruto’s itinerary is proceeding as planned, with intensified security measures in place.
