Eight people were killed on Saturday, December 13 night after they were involved in a tragic road accident along the Kericho-Nyamira highway.
The accident, which occurred at the Bw’arani area near Ekerenyo, involved a 14-seater public service vehicle (PSV) and a trailer.
The shuttle was ferrying passengers from Nairobi while the trailer was heading towards Kericho, when the accident happened.
Five people died on the spot, while three others succumbed to the injuries in the hospital.
Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo, who visited survivors at the Nyamira County Referral Hospital, said his administration is making arrangements to refer two critically injured patients who require specialised treatment.
“They survived but sustained serious head injuries that require the attention of a neurosurgeon,” said Governor Nyaribo.
The Nyamira governor also announced that the county will form a committee to help the families affected in the accident.
“My Administration is setting up a committee that will identify the specific needs of the affected families to enable us to offer them targeted support,” Nyaribo added.
This comes after former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo died in a road accident on Saturday morning along the Nakuru- Naivasha Highway.
Jirongo was driving from Nakuru heading towards Nairobi before colliding head-on with a passenger bus.
President William Ruto mourned Jirongo as a relentless go-getter, seasoned businessman, and a consummate politician who refused to be defined, let alone defeated, by life’s challenges.
“He was a fighter in every sense: blunt yet warm, bold yet approachable, enlightened and endlessly entrepreneurial. Above all, he was generous to a fault; always willing to give, to uplift, and to back others with his time, resources, and belief.
