Former Cabinet Minister and Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo succumbed to severe crush injuries to the chest, abdomen, and spine, sustained in a road accident in Naivasha on Saturday, December 13, 2025, an autopsy has confirmed. The findings, released on Wednesday, December 17, by government pathologist Johansen Oduor and family-appointed pathologists, attributed his death to blunt force trauma.
The postmortem, conducted at Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi, revealed extensive injuries including multiple rib fractures, a perforated heart with ruptured major vessels, and significant internal bleeding in the chest cavity.
Additionally, Jirongo suffered crush injuries extending into the abdominal area, liver damage, and a transected spinal cord at the thoracic level, alongside fractures to his right hand and both lower limbs. Dr. Martin Wanyoike, a family-appointed heart specialist, stated that these injuries were “not compatible with life”.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has since launched a probe into the incident, which occurred at approximately 2:19 AM on the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway.
CCTV footage from a nearby petrol station showed Jirongo’s vehicle entering the station, pausing at the exit, and then turning back towards Nairobi just seconds before a PSV bus collided with his car.
The head-on impact propelled Jirongo’s car approximately 25 meters from the collision point. The bus driver has been re-summoned for further police action, and investigators are reviewing Jirongo’s movements prior to the crash, including interactions at a Karen restaurant.
The family, led by former Westlands MP Fred Gumo, expressed doubts about the initial police report and is demanding a thorough investigation into how Jirongo, who was reportedly heading home to Gigiri from Karen, ended up in Naivasha.
Political figures, including Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, have also called for a transparent and credible inquiry.
