Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has ordered the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) to begin a crackdown on noisy clubs within Nairobi County.
In a statement on Tuesday, October 22, Duale said NEMA officials should also target night-time construction, improper waste disposal, and air quality.
“I have directed NEMA’s Nairobi office to launch a major crackdown on pollution, targeting noise from clubs, nighttime construction, improper waste disposal, and air quality. The multi-agency operation, led by the NEMA Police Unit, marks the beginning of a nationwide anti-pollution campaign,” read the statement in part.
CS Duale also warned that clubs in residential areas would no longer be allowed to operate unless they fully complied with noise and environmental legislation.
“Going forward, NEMA will not permit clubs in residential areas unless they fully comply with soundproofing and environmental laws. The era of impunity by club owners and private developers must end,” Duale added.
The move comes days after Duale ordered the immediate closure of the Fay’s Bistro club in Kilimani, following persistent complaints of noise pollution from local residents.
“I have ordered the immediate closure of Fay’s Bistro club in Kilimani, Nairobi, for noise violations. The NEMA Director General, accompanied by the NEMA Police unit, is on-site to enforce the closure. Let this serve as a stern warning to all clubs operating in residential areas: any that continue to play loud music will face the same action. This impunity will not be tolerated!,” said Duale.
