Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has condemned the violence witnessed on Sunday, January 25, during former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s church event in Othaya, Nyeri County.
In a statement via X, CS Murkomen said violence has no place in society, especially at a place of worship.
“I have noted with great concern the incident at Witima ACK Church in Othaya, Nyeri County. Violence anywhere, and least of all in a place of worship, is unacceptable,” said Murkomen.
The Interior CS noted that he has spoken to the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, who assured him that investigations are underway and are being handled with urgency.
Murkomen said the police should move with speed and arrest the people behind the chaos witnessed during the church service.
“I have spoken with the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Douglas Kanja, who has assured me that investigations are underway with the urgency this matter deserves and that the perpetrators will be brought to justice.
“The police must move without fear or favour and deal decisively with the sponsors and perpetrators of this act without regard to their status in society or political affiliation,” Murkomen added.
Further, he reiterated the government’s commitment to upholding the tenets of democracy, including the right to lawful assembly and freedom of worship.
Murkomen called on members of the public in Othaya to remain calm as law enforcement agencies address the matter.
His statement comes after Gachagua accused the government of planning to assassinate him during the church service.
The former DP claimed that there was a ‘killer squad’ backed by local police officers deployed to the church to target him.
“Please note that the killer squad backed by the local police is all over the two venues, and we don’t know their intention after failing to assassinate me inside a church.
“My gratitude to all leaders and the people of Kenya for coming out to condemn this heinous act by Mr. William Ruto,” Gachagua claimed.
