The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Renson Ingonga, has approved murder charges against two police officers linked to the fatal shooting of Shukri Ibrahim Adan in Nairobi’s Mukuru Kwa Njenga area.
In a statement, Mukuru Community Justice Centre said the DPP gave a green light to the charges following investigations by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) into the January 11 incident.
The two officers, identified as Godwin Mjomba and Patrick Mutunga, are now set to be arraigned before Milimani High Court Judge Martin Muya to answer to the charges.
“Today we stood at Milimani Law Courts in solidarity with the family of Shukri Ibrahim Adan. The ODPP has approved murder charges against Godwin Mjomba and Patrick Mutunga.
“Plea taking was postponed due to the absence of the High Court judge and will now take place tomorrow via a virtual court session. Justice for Shukri must not be delayed; we remain vigilant,” the organization stated.
Mjomba and Mutunga have been in custody since their arrest over Shukri’s death, which occurred on January 11 within the Villa Police Station jurisdiction.
This comes days after IPOA launched investigations into Shukri Ibrahim’s shooting at Mukuru Kwa Njenga.
In a statement, IPOA said on the fateful day, three individuals, Wycliff Nyakwama, Festus Mutinda, and Shukri Ibrahim, were enroute to deliver a motor vehicle to a client in Imara Daima when the vehicle was involved in a traffic accident with a Matatu.
A confrontation ensued between the drivers of the two vehicles, prompting the trio to drive away after the matatu driver called for reinforcement from colleagues.
The three occupants of the motor vehicle later parked at MCC School and began walking back to the scene.
While walking back, they were intercepted by police officers, Sergeant Godwin Mjomba and APC Patrick Mutunga Titus, who ordered them to lie down.
During the encounter, Sergeant Godwin Mjomba allegedly discharged his firearm, fatally injuring Mr Shukri Ibrahim. The deceased sustained a gunshot wound to the head and died at the scene.
