The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested three traffic police officers attached to the Kyumbi Traffic Police Base in Machakos County on allegations of soliciting and receiving bribes from motorists along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway.
The officers, identified as Corporals David Gitonga, Herman Echakara, and Lucy Ekwan, were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation at a roadblock near Machakos Junction.
The Tuesday operation is part of the EACC’s sustained drive to combat corruption within law enforcement and promote integrity and accountability in public service.
Investigators indicated that the arrested officers allegedly solicited bribes from motorists passing through the Kyumbi area, a key transit point along the highway.
One additional officer reportedly evaded arrest during the crackdown, and efforts to trace and apprehend the suspect are currently ongoing.
The arrested corporals were escorted to the EACC Lower Eastern Regional Office in Machakos, where they were processed and their statements recorded as investigations continue.
This incident follows a series of similar operations by the EACC. On December 30 last year, two traffic officers were nabbed in Mombasa and Murang’a counties over corruption allegations.
In Murang’a, an officer was found with Ksh6,450 believed to be collected bribes within two hours.
Another officer was arrested along the Mtwapa-Malindi Road with Ksh13,750 in suspected corruption proceeds.
Just weeks prior, three other traffic officers, including an Inspector of Police, were apprehended along the Kisumu-Kisii Highway at Sondu for demanding bribes without conducting inspections or enforcing traffic regulations.
The EACC has urged members of the public and law enforcement personnel to report any instances of bribery or corrupt practices, emphasizing that public cooperation is critical in strengthening accountability and restoring trust in public institutions.
