The Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) party leader Eugene Wamalwa has announced the party’s exit from the Raila Odinga-led Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition.
Speaking on Saturday during a national delegates meeting in Webuye, Wamalwa said they can no longer remain in the coalition since their ODM party counterparts are in government.
“We will not be a party to the praise and worship choir that has been created who have joined the president. We are saying as DAP-K that we cannot and we no longer find it tenable to continue being in a relationship with people who are no longer like-minded with us,” Wamalwa remarked.
He also noted that the collaboration of some coalition leaders with the ruling Kenya Kwanza government has made the coalition unpopular with the people.
Wamalwa went on to say the party would immediately be embarking on a nationwide recruitment drive for candidates to vie in all the electoral seats in the 2027 election.
“The party has also said that with all our chairmen from all our 47 counties, we will go back to each of the 47 counties to start an aggressive recruitment drive to prepare our party for the next elections.
“The DAP-K will be fielding candidates in all positions from MCA to MPs to Women Representatives to Governor to Senator to the President and yours truly has been given that honourous task of carrying the flag into the presidential race of August 10, 2027,” he added.
DAP-K’s Exit from Azimio comes months after NARC Kenya party leader Martha Karua announced her exit from the coalition.
In a statement, Karua noted that NARC Kenya’s stay in Azimio was no longer tenable.
“As NARC Kenya, by way of this letter, we are giving notice to exit the Coalition as stipulated in the exit clause (s) in the Coalition Agreement. This notice is effective from the date of this letter,” Karua stated.
