The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested a man who posed as one of its investigators and attempted to extort KSh 2 million from a director of a company contracted by the Narok County Government, in a scheme that unravelled after the target reported the approach to the Commission.
The suspect, identified as Felix Manyaga Mogaka, contacted the company director and falsely claimed that the firm was under investigation for corruption. He then arranged a meeting at a hotel and demanded KSh 2 million, allegedly promising to halt any further action against the company if the payment was made.
Acting on a complaint from the targeted director, EACC mounted a sting operation that culminated in Mogaka’s arrest on Monday, June 22, 2026, while he was allegedly receiving KSh 200,000 as part of the demanded bribe. The money was recovered and will be used as an exhibit in the ongoing investigations.
Subsequent checks confirmed that Mogaka has no employment relationship with the Commission, establishing that his conduct amounted to deliberate impersonation of a state officer for purposes of fraud and extortion.
“The suspect is being processed at the Integrity Centre pending the conclusion of investigations,” the Commission confirmed.
The arrest came in the same week that EACC also nabbed two Kenya Revenue Authority officials, Faith Gathoni Njoroge and Tyson Marango Owuor, who were based at KRA’s Upperhill offices. The two had allegedly demanded KSh 3 million from a taxpayer seeking to resolve a Capital Gains Tax assessment of KSh 4.5 million. EACC detectives arrested them while receiving KSh 900,000 as part of the payment.
The back-to-back operations signal an intensified anti-corruption crackdown by the Commission across public institutions and among those who exploit its name for personal gain.
In the wake of the impersonation arrest, EACC issued a public advisory warning Kenyans to be alert to fraudsters misusing the Commission’s identity. The Commission stated that official summonses are always issued in writing and require appearances at its offices, and that its investigators do not conduct meetings in hotels or solicit money in exchange for dropping or influencing investigations.
