Four people have been killed in a suspected attack in the Itimba-Ithei area of Tseikuru sub-county, Kitui County.

Kitui County Commissioner Erastus Mbui confirmed the attack, saying it was carried out by armed individuals suspected to be camel herders.

According to Mbui, the four victims were watering their cattle at a stream when the suspected camel herders attacked them.

Following the attack, the assailants allegedly fled into the nearby Mwingi North Game Reserve.

“The victims were watering their cattle at a stream about three kilometres from Kwa Kamari when they were ambushed by attackers who fatally shot herders and also opened fire on several cows, in an area not far from Kwa Kamari where seven people were killed in a similar attack last month,” Mbui said.

Kitui County Woman Representative Irene Kasalu has condemned the attack and demanded that the government take action.

Kasalu also called out Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale for his remarks on the conflict in the area and demanded for his resignation.

“We have no issues with the Somali community, but are not happy with those who kill people of Kitui. We have a problem with Duale, who claims that he owns the camels, and if it is possible, President William Ruto, Duale should resign,” the Kitui Women Rep said.

Meanwhile, security agencies have launched a manhunt for the attackers as they intensify operations in the area.

The attack comes almost a month after suspected camel herders killed eight people in Tseikuru, Mwingi North Constituency, triggering outrage in Kitui County.
