Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua now claims that security agents in unmarked cars have been following him and were spotted around his Nairobi and Nyeri homes.
In a statement on Wednesday night, Gachagua said the agents are taking note of all his visitors and where he goes.
“Security agents in unmarked cars have been following me wherever I go. They are parking at the entrance of my Nairobi residence, taking note of all my visitors, and they trail me whenever I leave the house, even all the way to my rural home in Nyeri,” Gachagua stated.
The former DP noted that on Sunday a saloon car that was parked at the entrance to his residence trailed him to PCEA Kerarapon Church, where he went for a late lunch and back to the house.
According to Gachagua, he checked the car’s license on the NTSA portal and noticed that the number plates were registered to a lorry.
“This surveillance and intimidation of Kenyans was last witnessed during the era of the dreaded ‘Special Branch’ during the 24 years of Moi’s misrule,” Gachagua remarked.
The former DP asked the government to leave him alone to enjoy peace as a private Kenyan since he was hounded out of office.
“In this era of extrajudicial killings, forced abductions, and disappearances by state agents, I have thought it important to share with Kenyans the harassment and intimidation I am going through and inform them to hold the state responsible if I am harmed by state agents.
“I request the state to leave me alone! You hounded me out of office, and you should now allow me to enjoy my peace as a private citizen,” he added.
Gachagua’s statement comes days after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) refuted allegations that detectives in unmarked vehicles attempted to prevent him from attending a church service in Nairobi.
