Gor Mahia FC, affectionately known as K’Ogalo, delivered a commanding 3-0 victory over Mara Sugar at the Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday afternoon, reclaiming the top position in the SportPesa League.
This crucial win sees the record champions leapfrog their perennial rivals, AFC Leopards, by virtue of a superior goal difference, intensifying the title race.
Coming into the match under pressure after AFC Leopards’ late win on Saturday, Gor Mahia showcased remarkable composure and skill.
Despite the absence of key midfielder Enock Morrison due to suspension and Ben Stanley Omondi to injury, coach Charles Akonnor’s side dismantled their opponents.
Akonnor made strategic changes, introducing Jackson Dwang for his first start of the season in midfield and Ebenezer Adukwaw in attack. Mara Sugar also made three changes to their squad.
The goals secured a vital three points for Gor Mahia, bringing their total to 33 points, level with AFC Leopards. The win also extended their unbeaten run to six matches, following a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory against Murang’a Seal in midweek.
Mara Sugar, who are 13th on the table with 20 points, faced a tough challenge, having won just once in their last five games and being winless in four matches prior to this encounter. The defeat ended Mara Sugar’s impressive away run.
In other league action, Kakamega Homeboyz secured a 2-0 victory against Kariobangi Sharks at Bukhungu Stadium, while Murang’a Seal defeated Bidco United 2-1 at St Sebastian Park. These results further underscore the competitive nature of the Kenyan Premier League, with crucial points being contested at both ends of the table.
Gor Mahia’s starting lineup included Gad Mathews, Paul Ochuoga, Bryton Onyona, Sylvester Owino, Michael Kibwage, Jackson Dwang, Alpha Onyango, George Amonno, Ebenezer Adukwaw, Shariff Musa, and Felix Olouch.
Mara Sugar’s team featured Evans Omondi, Joseph Okwenda, Jim Owili, Robinson Musungu, Nassor Shikokoti, Kelvin Mwavali, Harin Thomas, Ainea Ndete, Timothy Nataka, Silas Wafula, and Alex Imbusia.
The league continues to promise more drama and excitement as teams battle for the coveted title and to avoid relegation.
