Governor Nyong’o Issues Warning to Violence Sponsors After 2 People Died in Kisumu Clashes

Kisumu Governor Peter Anyang Nyong’o has issued a stern warning to sponsors behind recent violence in the lakeside county.

In a statement on Monday, Governor Nyong’o condemned the Sunday violence, which left two people dead and property destroyed.

“Yesterday, in the Milimani area, we witnessed a scene that has no place in our county: two organised groups of youth set against each other, resulting in the deaths of two young men.

“Property was destroyed, including a motor vehicle and no fewer than nine motorcycles, and the peace of the neighbourhood was shattered,” he stated.

Governor Nyong’o said he met the Kisumu County Commissioner Mohammed Ramadhan Mwabudzo in their capacity as co-chairs of the County Security Authority to assess the situation and coordinate the government’s response.

According to Nyong’o, eight suspects have already been arrested in connection with the violence and are being processed through the justice system.

“As Co-Chair of the County Security Authority alongside County Commissioner Mohammed Ramadhan Mwabudzo, we met and provide this update: Eight suspects are already in custody, and the judicial process is underway,” he said.

Nyong’o also disclosed that security agencies have intensified efforts to curb criminal activities across the county, revealing that 200 suspects have been arrested since the county’s last security briefing.

“Since our last briefing to the media on security, two hundred suspects have been apprehended across Kisumu County and investigations into their involvement in criminal activities are ongoing. They will, in due course, be arraigned in court,” he said.

Further, the Kisumu Governor issued a warning to those financing and organising the unrest, saying they would not escape accountability.

“To those who finance and orchestrate this violence: you are not invisible. He who rides a tiger eventually discovers that the greatest danger lies not in mounting it but in trying to dismount. Your time is coming,” he added.
