The Government has announced a compensation package of Sh200,000 for each family that lost a loved one in the tragic fire at Utumishi Girls Academy in Gilgil.
In a statement on Sunday, government spokesperson, Isaac Mwaura, said the government will also extend support to the family of the parent who lost her life in a road accident while rushing to the school to know the whereabouts of her daughter.
Mwaura also noted that the government will cover all medical expenses incurred by over 79 students admitted after the fire tragedy.
“The Government has undertaken various interventions to support the affected families and students including: Facilitating the airlifting and transfer of injured students from St. Joseph Hospital to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for specialized treatment and committed to meeting all medical expenses incurred at both hospitals and paying KSh 200,000 to each bereaved family including the family of the parent who tragically lost her life while coming to pick her child,” he stated.
Mwaura also said the government has pledged to cover funeral-related expenses, including mortuary charges, coffins, transportation of the deceased, and a requiem mass to be held at Utumishi Girls Academy on a date to be announced.
“The Government has committed to meeting funeral-related expenses, including mortuary charges, coffins, transportation of the deceased, and the requiem mass that will be held at Utumishi Girls Academy on a date to be communicated,” he added.
Mwaura further said a multi-agency team led by the National Disaster Operations Centre (NDOC) continues to coordinate support for the affected families and oversee the implementation of the interventions.
The government spokesperson reiterated the government’s commitment to walking with the families through the difficult period of mourning while ensuring the injured students receive the necessary care and support.
