Guinness World Records Reacts After Truphena Muthoni Completed 72-hour Tree Hugging Challenge

The Guinness World Records has stated that it is yet to receive evidence to consider environmental activist Truphena Muthoni’s 72-hour tree-hugging challenge for certification.

In a statement on Friday, December 12, GWR said it is looking forward to receiving and assessing evidence of Muthoni’s attempt.

“Truphena Muthoni’s tree-hugging record attempt this week in Kenya, inspired by ‘a deep-rooted passion for trees and the vital role they play in our ecosystem,’ has in turn inspired many comments on our social channels.

“We know Truphena’s fans are excited to hear the results, and we look forward to receiving and assessing the evidence. For now, her current record stands at 48 hours, achieved earlier this year in Nairobi,” the organization stated.

GWR noted that Muthoni holds the 48-hour tree-hugging record, which she achieved in February this year in Nairobi.

“The longest marathon hugging a tree is 48 hours and was achieved by Truphena Muthoni (Kenya) in Nairobi, Kenya, from 31 January to 2 February 2025,” GWR added.

Muthoni set a new world record after hugging a tree for 72 hours at the Nyeri County Governor’s office on Thursday, December 11.

Muthoni kicked off her record-breaking attempt on Tuesday, December 8, 2025, at 12:20 p.m., drawing attention from Kenyans and global audiences.

She also incorporated a three-hour blindfold experience during the attempt to simulate visual impairment and draw attention to disability inclusion

High-profile figures rallied behind the environmentalist, including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga.

During the entire period, the 22-year-old environmentalist did not take any food, water, or take a break to rest.

The record attempt garnered significant support from various organizations and including a Ksh 1 million cash reward, a three-night Mombasa holiday, and a Samsung Galaxy Fold 7 phone.
