President Ruto with Governor Gladys Wanga
President William Ruto on Tuesday announced that Homa Bay County will host the Mashujaa Day celebrations in 2025.
Speaking during the second International Investment Conference in Homa Bay, Ruto said the county will host the national holiday at Raila Odinga Stadium.
The Head of State’s announcement came after Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga asked Ruto to consider her county to host a national holiday.
Wanga noted that the county has built a modern stadium that is currently being used to host the Kenya Premier League sports tournament.
“Kindly consider Homa Bay as the next venue for a national holiday. We have a facility where large gatherings can take place,” Wanga asked the President.
President Ruto while responding to the Homa Bay Governor said he would attend the 2025 Mashujaa Day celebrations in Homa Bay.
“God willing, I will be here next year to launch a project and attend Mashujaa Day celebrations,” Ruto remarked.
The national celebrations were devolved in 2016 by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta. In the arrangement, counties host two of the three annual national holidays on a rotational basis while Nairobi retains one, Independence Day on December 12, otherwise known as Jamhuri Day.
Kisumu and Kisii are the only counties in Nyanza where such celebrations have been held.
This will be the first time that Homa Bay will host a national celebration. The county’s stadium can accommodate at least 5,000 people in the main pavilion.
Ruto’s announcement comes days after the Ministry of Interior said this year’s Madaraka Day celebrations will be held in Bungoma County.
In a statement dated Monday, February 5, the Ministry announced that the June 1 public holiday will be marked at the Masinde Muliro Stadium in Bungoma County.
