The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has refuted reports circulating online alleging that its Chair, Erastus Edung Ethekon, has resigned.
In a statement on Wednesday, April 1, IEBC dismissed the reports and asked Kenyans to verify information on its official communication channels.
“Fake news alert. For accurate and up-to-date information, please visit our official website (iebc.or.ke) and our verified social media platforms (@IEBCKenya),” the commission said.
Claims alleging that Ethekon had stepped down emerged on X, popularly known as Twitter, through a letter purportedly published in a gazette notice on Wednesday, April 1.
The clarification came moments after IEBC dismissed claims of registering 36,942 new voters on Monday, March 30.
The commission flagged a digital card that was circulating on social media platforms as fake and called on members of the public not to fall for it.
“Fake news alert. Beware of fraudulent Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) Data on social media. For accurate and up-to-date information on ECVR, please visit our official website (https://iebc.or.ke) and our verified social media platforms (IEBC Kenya),” the commission stated.
The electoral body is currently conducting the Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR). The drive began on Monday, March 30, and will run up to Tuesday, 28th April 2026.
The registration is taking place at County Assembly Wards on a rotational basis, at Universities and Colleges, and at Huduma Centres.
On Tuesday, March 24, IEBC Commissioner Alutalala Mukhwana disclosed that the electoral body has registered 250,391 new voters.
The IEBC Commissioner noted that Nairobi County is leading the exercise with 49,055 new registrations, followed by Kiambu County with 20,404.
However, Mukhwana expressed concern over the persistently low registration numbers in arid and semi-arid regions.
“Regrettably, the arid areas continue to perform dismally; Isiolo, Mandera, and Tana River are almost stagnant, and that is because of the lower population density and the migration patterns,” he stated.
