The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has confirmed that the next General Election will be held on Tuesday, August 10, 2027.
IEBC Commissioner Anne Nderitu confirmed the date on Wednesday, June 24, during the launch of the Election Operations Plan (EOP).
Nderitu also announced that any public officer intending to contest in the General Election must resign from office by February 9, 2027.
“A public officer who intends to contest in the General Election shall resign from public office within six (6) months before the date of the election, being on or before Tuesday, 9th February, 2027,” Nderitu announced.
The commission directed political parties to submit their membership lists by March 16, 2027.
Political parties intending to field candidates in the general election must also submit the names of individuals seeking nomination through party primaries, together with the dates and venues of the primaries, by the same date.
The IEBC further directed political parties to conclude their primary elections and resolve all internal party disputes by May 9, 2027.
Independent candidates seeking to contest in the elections will also be required to meet several conditions.
Nderitu stated that individuals intending to run as independent candidates must not be members of any registered political party by May 9, 2027, which is at least three months before the General Election. The candidates must also submit their names and symbols to the commission by the same date.
The nomination of political party candidates and independent candidates will take place between May 29 and June 11, 2027.
“The nomination papers shall be delivered by the candidates to the Chairperson of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission between the hours of eight O’clock in the morning and one O’clock in the afternoon, and between the hours of two O’clock and four O’clock in the afternoon at a place designated by the Commission,” she stated.
Meanwhile, the official campaign period for the 2027 General Election will commence on May 29, 2027, and end on August 7, 2027.
