IG Kanja Appoints New GSU Commandant

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja.

The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, has appointed Johana Kiplangat Tonui as the new Commandant of the General Service Unit (GSU).

National Police Service (NPS) Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga announced the appointment in a statement on Wednesday, June 10.

Before the appointment, Tonui was serving in the Directorate of Operations within the Kenya Police Service as an AIG.

Tonui will replace Ranson Lolmodooni, who has been serving as the commandant of GSU since July 12, 2024.

At the same time, IG Kanja moved AIG Frederick Egesa Nyongesa from the GSU to become the unit’s Deputy Commandant.

Further, IG Kanja deployed AIG Paul Maingo Mumo from the Directorate of Quality Assurance at the Kenya Police Service to the Director, Internal Affairs Unit.

According to Nyaga, the changes were made following recommendations from the National Police Service Board.

“The Inspector General of Police, Mr Douglas Kanja, upon the recommendation of the National Police Service Board, has today, June 10, 2026, deployed the following officers with immediate effect,” the statement read in part.

This comes weeks after IG Kanja made changes to President William Ruto’s security detail following a security breach during an event in Kilifi County.

“I have also ordered immediate changes to the security detail responsible for the President’s protection in order to strengthen protocols and seal any existing vulnerabilities,” Kanja stated.

Noah Kirwa Maiyo, who was the commandant of the Presidential Escort Unit (PEU), was relieved of his duties and moved to the Kenya Police Headquarters at Vigilance House in Nairobi.

William Sawe, who was the commanding officer of the Recce sub-unit, was appointed as the PEU Commandant, replacing Maiyo.
