Jambojet to Triple Fleet and Expand Across Africa

Kenya’s leading low-cost carrier, Jambojet, a subsidiary of Kenya Airways, has announced plans to triple its fleet over the next five years in a move to expand across Africa. Currently operating 11 aircraft, the airline plans to acquire new planes capable of longer flights to reach destinations in West, South, and North Africa, responding to rising passenger demand across the continent.

Since its inception in 2014, Jambojet has grown rapidly, celebrating its 11th anniversary in 2025 and transporting over 9 million passengers. The airline currently operates a fleet primarily composed of De Havilland Canada Dash 8 Q-400 aircraft, which are efficient on short-to-medium haul routes. Its dominance in East Africa is evident, holding a 53% domestic market share in the first half of 2025.

“This expansion marks a pivotal shift for Jambojet,” said CEO Karanja Ndegwa. “By introducing larger aircraft, we will extend our reach beyond East Africa and tap into the growing demand for air travel across the continent.”

The mixed-fleet strategy will allow Jambojet to serve both regional and longer-haul routes, positioning it to capitalize on Africa’s fast-growing aviation market. Industry analysts note that this expansion could transform the continent’s air travel landscape by improving connectivity, creating more affordable options, and supporting tourism and trade.

Jambojet’s growth strategy emphasizes operational excellence and a customer-centered approach. By the end of 2024, the airline targeted 1.5 million passengers, reflecting its commitment to accessible and efficient travel.

As Jambojet charts its pan-African ambitions, the airline is set to become a key player in connecting Africa’s cities and economies, further strengthening Kenya’s position as a regional aviation hub.
