Karen Hospital, Chief Cardiologist Dr Dan Gikonyo has announced that Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is in stable condition after he was rushed to the health facility.
Speaking on Friday night, Gikonyo revealed that Gachagua was admitted around 3 PM after experiencing severe chest pains.
“He came with chest pain, and he is undergoing various tests including blood tests. Right now, he is stable, the pain is less, blood pressure is okay, and we are still carrying on with the investigation,” Gikonyo said.
He added, “We always play on the safe side; we don’t want to rush and make a mistake. You want to make sure that when you are done, and you are sure that somebody is safe.”
To ensure his safety, Dr Gikonyo said DP Gachagua would need to be closely monitored for 48 to 72 hours.
“If you come with chest pains in any hospital in this country or even in other parts of the world, you will be held captive for at least 48 to 72 hours to rule out serious issues. I am sure you guys read a lot, stress can cause heart problems,” Gikoyo stated.
Gachagua fell ill just before he was due to take the stand for cross-examination in his impeachment trial in the Senate.
The deputy was nowhere to be seen during the afternoon session. Senate Speaker Amason Kingi was forced to adjourn the session until 5 pm.
After resuming the session, the Speaker ruled that the impeachment trial would proceed despite the absence of DP Rigathi Gachagua.
The Senators on Thursday night then voted on the impeachment charges against the DP and upheld his removal from office.
