A family in Nairobi’s Kawangware area is mourning the tragic death of Amos Isokha, who passed away at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, following severe complications from a tooth extraction.
Isokha’s death has brought to light the perilous operations of unregistered dental clinics in the Kenya.
Amos Isokha was rushed to KNH after an alleged fake dentist, operating a clinic in Kawangware, performed a tooth extraction that led to life-threatening complications.
Doctors at KNH acted swiftly, performing two surgeries in an attempt to save his life. Dr. Edwin Rono, a KNH physician, noted the critical nature of Isokha’s condition, explaining that infections from such procedures can be fatal.
Despite initial interventions, the infection spread, ultimately leading to his demise. His wife tearfully recounted the doctor’s message: “The doctor told me that his condition became worse at night, his heart had stopped beating, they tried to resuscitate him, but he succumbed at 11 pm”.
The Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council (KMPDC) had previously shut down an unregistered dental clinic, Life Clinic, in Kawangware on January 11, 2026, following reports of adverse patient outcomes, including Isokha’s case.
Preliminary investigations by KMPDC revealed that Life Clinic was operating without proper certification, and the individual associated with it reportedly ran other illegal health facilities.
During enforcement actions, KMPDC officers also identified another patient at Jamii Medical Centre, an unauthorized inpatient unit linked to the same proprietor, who was not receiving appropriate medical care and was subsequently referred to KNH.
KMPDC CEO David Kariuki confirmed that the clinic where Amos was treated was not registered.
The alleged dentist is reportedly on the run, with law enforcement actively pursuing suspects involved in these illegal operations.
The council has urged the public to verify practitioners through its official register before seeking medical care to prevent similar tragedies.
The incident underscores the urgent need for stricter regulation and public awareness regarding healthcare providers.
