The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a month-long partial closure of a section of Waiyaki Way (A8 Road), setting the stage for renewed traffic disruption along one of Nairobi’s busiest corridors.
In a notice issued on Friday, July 24, 2026, and signed by Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli, the authority said the Mombasa-bound lanes between the Global Trade Centre (GTC) and Villa Rosa Kempinski will be closed from Friday, July 31, to Monday, August 31, 2026, to pave way for scheduled highway maintenance works.
The closure is expected to affect motorists from more than ten estates that rely on the corridor, among them Westlands, Parklands, Kangemi, Mountain View, Kitisuru, Loresho, Kyuna, Spring Valley, Highridge, Muthangari, Lower Kabete and parts of Riverside. Motorists using the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway are also likely to feel the impact, since Waiyaki Way remains the principal gateway linking the capital to the Rift Valley region.
KeNHA clarified that the shutdown will only be partial, with the affected sections remaining passable through service lanes while maintenance is undertaken. The authority urged road users to plan ahead and make use of alternative routes to ease pressure on the highway during the period.
Motorists have been directed to consider Lower Kabete Road and Peponi Road as diversions around the Westlands section, while those headed toward Upper Hill, Kilimani or Mombasa Road can use James Gichuru Road and Ring Road, Kileleshwa, to bypass the closed stretch.
According to the notice, the closure is meant to allow for highway maintenance works on the road section. Police officers and traffic marshals will be stationed along the corridor throughout the exercise to guide motorists and manage the flow of vehicles.
The latest closure comes even as KeNHA continues works on a separate stretch of Waiyaki Way in Westlands, where a three-month partial closure running from June 25 to September 25 is underway to allow construction of new pedestrian footbridges near Dunhill Towers and the Fogo Gaucho–QuickMart area.
Both projects fall under KeNHA’s broader Sh4.5 billion capacity-enhancement and beautification programme linking Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to ABC Place in Westlands, being implemented by the China Road and Bridge Corporation. The wider works include drainage upgrades, recarpeting, new pedestrian walkways, street lighting and cabro paving.
KeNHA has assured the public that normal traffic operations will resume once the ongoing maintenance works are complete.
