Former Chief Justice David Maraga has criticized government officials over proposals to amend the 2010 Constitution.
In a statement on Monday, December 29, Maraga claimed that the push to amend the Constitution is aimed at extending the presidential term limit.
“The sanctity of our supreme law is once again under threat by the Ruto regime and its faithful handlers. Kenyans, be warned.
“The prime object of the regime’s current drive to amend the Constitution is to extend Ruto’s presidential term. The other proposals are camouflages,” said Maraga.
The former Chief Justice emphasized that Kenya’s crisis is not legal but one of implementation and integrity.
Maraga argued that the challenges confronting the nation stem not from the Constitution itself, but from the deliberate failure of leaders to fully implement the 2010 Charter.
The 2027 presidential aspirant vowed to remain steadfast against the erosion of Kenya’s democracy for what he described as “political convenience.
“I have committed myself to lead the Ukatiba Movement. This movement is founded on a singular, unwavering principle: Strict fidelity to the Constitution. Our mission is to protect Kenyans from being burdened with the costs of a bloated, illegal bureaucracy and to ensure that the power remains where it belongs, with the people,” Maraga added.
This comes days after Mudavadi warned that the 2027 general election risks being nullified over a legal crisis.
The Prime Cabinet Secretary floated the idea of holding a constitutional referendum alongside the 2027 General Election.
“Remember, no valid population census data, no valid boundaries review, and no general elections. That is the law and not my words. We must embrace the referendum as a legal necessity to save our democracy,” Mudavadi said.
He continued, “There is a beaconing reality that 2027 is a referendum moment. Allow me to state without fear or contradiction that there is a need for constitutional review. As a leader, I must say the truth about the looming constitutional storm.”
