The Ministry of Health has announced three new cases of the Mpox disease in the country.
In a statement on Friday November 8, Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa said the new cases are from Mombasa, Nakuru and Naiorbi Counties.
“As part of our commitment to transparency and public health, we wish to provide an update on the current Mpox situation in the country. After nearly a month with no new cases, the National Public Health Laboratory has confirmed three (3) new cases from Mombasa, Nakuru, and Nairobi counties,” read the statement in part.
The new cases have brought the total number of confirmed cases to seventeen in the country. The cases are spread across Nakuru (3), Kajiado (2), Bungoma (2), Taita Taveta (1), Busia (1), Nairobi (2), Mombasa (2), Makueni (1), Kericho (1), Uasin Gishu (1), and Kilifi (1).
“Currently, three (3) cases are under management, and thirteen (13) patients have fully recovered and one (1) reported death. So far, eighty-three (83) contacts have been identified, with seventy-eight (78) completing the required 21-day follow-up. Of these contacts, three (3) have tested positive for Mpox, and two (2) remain under active follow-up,” CS Barasa stated.
She pointed out that 15,068 travelers have been screened at Points of Entry (POEs) in the last 24 hours, bringing the cumulative number to 1,701,813 screened across 26 POEs.
The National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) has tested a total of 271 samples, with seventeen (17) positive results, 250 negative, and four (4) pending.
CS Barasa called on Kenyans to defer non-essential travel to areas with active Mpox transmission.
“We call on all Kenyans to remain vigilant and follow Mpox preventive measures, which include avoiding close contact with infected individuals or their personal items, limiting the number of sexual partners to reduce exposure, and maintaining good hygiene through frequent hand washing or hand sanitizer use,” Barasa added.
