Murang’a Traffic Officer Arrested After Collecting Sh6,450 Bribery in Just Two Hours

On Tuesday, December 30 2025, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) intensified its nationwide crackdown on corrupt traffic officers, making several arrests as public complaints about bribery surged during this festive season.

A traffic officer attached to the Murang’a traffic base was apprehended along the Kenol-Murang’a Road with Ksh 6,450 in various denominations, believed to have been collected from motorists within a mere two hours.

This arrest followed multiple complaints from the public regarding rampant bribery by traffic officers.

The officer was processed at the EACC Central Regional Offices and later released on cash bail at Nyeri Police Station pending further investigations.

In a related operation, another officer along the Kerugoya-Kutus Road near Bekam reportedly escaped arrest, leaving behind official police attire.

Further south, in Mombasa County, Police Corporal Haroun Mazera Chamutu of Mtwapa Traffic Base was arrested along the Mombasa-Malindi Highway, found in possession of Ksh 13,750 in suspected bribery proceeds.

“Upon arrest, Kes13,750 in various denominations was recovered from the suspect. He was escorted to the EACC Upper Coast Regional Office in Malindi for statement recording and further processing,” stated the EACC.

The operations are part of a broader effort by the EACC to combat corruption in essential public services, particularly during peak travel periods when bribery cases tend to spike.

Just days prior, on Saturday, December 27, three other traffic officers, including Inspector of Police Rachel Wangetha, Corporal Wilberforce Koffi, and Corporal Shadrack Nerima, were arrested along the Kisumu-Kisii Highway at Sondu for allegedly soliciting bribes without conducting proper inspections.

EACC spokesperson Stephen Karuga emphasized the commission’s commitment to “promoting integrity, accountability and professionalism in public service” and urged citizens to continue reporting corruption incidents through official channels.
