The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, on Friday held a meeting with the leadership of the United Opposition in his office.
In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) said IG Kanja was flanked by his two deputies, Gilbert Masengeli and Eliud Lagat, during the meeting.
During the meeting, IG Kanja received a petition from the United Opposition leaders and promised to carefully look into it.
“The IG reiterated the Service’s position of political neutrality and its commitment to serve all Kenyans equally and without fear or favour,” NPS stated.
Moreover, Kanja reminded the opposition leaders of their obligation to ensure police were alerted to any meetings or visits to any part of the country for the purpose of enhancing security coverage.
The police boss also urged the leaders to ensure there was maximum cooperation between themselves and the police for efficient and effective investigations and follow-ups whenever an incident was reported.
“The IG and the leaders agreed that any incident must be officially reported and booked as per the law. IG Kanja assured the leaders he was looking forward to more open and positive collaboration and feedback between themselves and the police,” NPS added.
Meanwhile, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has threatened to call for nationwide protests if police officers who allegedly attacked him at ACK Witima Church in Othaya are not arrested.
Speaking on Friday, January 30, in Nairobi CBD, Gachagua gave the IG Kanja until February 16, 2026, to ensure the officers are arrested.
The former DP said that if the police officers are not arrested, he will call for demonstrations seeking the removal of IG Kanja, Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, DIG Eliud Lagat, and DIG Gilbert Masengeli from office.
“I have looked at the IG of police straight in the eye, and told him that the attack at Witima Church was an assassination attempt. A special squad of police officers called Nairobi Sierra of 12 officers was dispatched to eliminate us.
“We have told the IG that the squad must be arrested and disarmed. If this situation continues after February 16, tutaitisha maandamano to remove the Interior CS, Police IG, and the 2 DIGs from office,” Gachagua stated.
