The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a stern warning to motorists, particularly Public Service Vehicle (PSV) and commercial vehicle operators, against tampering with speed governors and driving under the influence of alcohol. The authority announced an intensive nationwide crackdown, including random breathalyzer tests, to enhance road safety during the festive period.
“During the ongoing enforcement operations, we have observed increasing cases of speed limiter tampering,” stated the NTSA in a press release. Tampering with these mandatory devices is not only unlawful but also gravely endangers the lives of passengers, pedestrians, and other road users. The NTSA emphasized that speed remains the leading cause of fatal road incidents.
The NTSA also reminded motorists, “Please remember, drink driving takes lives. It endangers your life and that of others.” To combat this, the authority is conducting random breathalyzer (AlcoBlow) tests.
A recent nighttime operation on the Embu-Nairobi highway resulted in several arrests, with some drivers exhibiting alarming blood alcohol levels, far exceeding the legal limit.
Under Kenyan law, penalties for driving under the influence can include license withdrawal or suspension, fines ranging from Ksh10,000 to Ksh20,000, or imprisonment for at least three months. Severe speeding or repeat offenses can incur fines up to Ksh100,000.
Beyond drunk driving and speed limiter violations, the crackdown also targets lane indiscipline and unsafe overtaking practices, which are significant contributors to head-on collisions and fatalities on Kenyan roads.
The NTSA urges all motorists to prioritize safety, designate sober drivers, or utilize alternative transport options if planning to consume alcohol.
