January 7, 2026, marked what would have been the 81st birthday of Kenya’s revered former Prime Minister, Raila Amolo Odinga.
Instead of traditional celebrations, the day was observed with profound reflection and gratitude by the Odinga family, who issued an emotional message thanking Kenyans and global leaders for their unwavering support following his passing in October 2025.
In a public statement, the family described the period as “profoundly painful” and expressed heartfelt appreciation to all who stood with them during the mourning and burial preparations.
“The Odinga Family wishes to express our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who stood with us during this profoundly painful time following the passing of our beloved Baba Rt Hon Raila Amolo Odinga,” the family stated.
Among those specifically acknowledged for their “outstanding support, understanding, and kindness” were President William Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Chief Justice Martha Koome, and the entire Kenyan government.
The family also extended special appreciation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his personal involvement and the Indian government’s assistance in the swift repatriation of Odinga’s body, which received full military honors in India.
Former presidents Uhuru Kenyatta (Kenya), Olusegun Obasanjo (Nigeria), Nana Akufo-Addo (Ghana), and Jakaya Kikwete (Tanzania), along with African Development Bank President Akinwumi Adesina, were recognized for their condolences and physical presence.
Governors Johnson Sakaja (Nairobi), Anyang’ Nyong’o (Kisumu), and James Orengo (Siaya) were also thanked for facilitating smooth transit arrangement.
The family further acknowledged the dedicated medical teams in both India and Kenya who cared for Odinga in his final days.
