ODM NEC Removes Edwin Sifuna as Secretary General

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) National Executive Committee (NEC) has resolved to remove Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna from the party’s Secretary General position.

In a statement, ODM said the NEC received and considered a report from the Internal Disputes Resolution Committee (IDRC), which had been constituted to hear and determine a complaint against Sifuna in his capacity as Secretary General.

The committee unanimously adopted the report and endorsed Sifuna’s removal from office. After reviewing the findings and recommendations.

“After going through the report and the findings of the IDRC under Article 74(2) of the Party constitution, the NEC unanimously resolved to adopt the Committee’s recommendations and endorsed the removal from office of Senator Edwin Watenya Sifuna. Effectively, Sen. Sifuna ceases to be the Secretary General of the ODM Party,” ODM stated.

The party defended the decision to kick out Sifuna by citing previous observations made by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT) regarding the autonomy of political parties to enforce internal disciplinary mechanisms.

ODM noted that the disciplinary process was delayed after Sifuna moved to the PPDT and obtained orders barring the party from taking disciplinary action against him.

However, the orders were vacated on March 26, 2026, allowing the internal process to proceed.

The party further said that after the Internal Disputes Resolution Mechanism (IDRM) commenced the proceedings, Sifuna again sought the intervention of the tribunal in an attempt to halt the process.

“On April 9, 2026, the Tribunal ruled that the Party was at liberty to proceed with, hear, and determine the disciplinary proceedings against Sifuna, but was not to communicate or implement any decision arising therefrom until the application challenging the IDRM process was heard and determined,” the statement read.

The ODM party also said Sifuna was invited to appear before the disciplinary committee and was granted requests for adjournments on two separate occasions, but he responded through his lawyers instead.

“On April 20, 2026, when he was bound to appear, his lead counsel, Isaac Okero, SC, appeared before the Committee and informed them that his client was not willing to proceed, citing bias within the Committee. The IDRM had no option other than to proceed to hear the matter ex parte,” the party said.
