Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have recovered heroin valued at approximately Ksh1 million from a Nairobi-bound bus.
In a statement on Thursday, July 2, DCI said the drugs were recovered after officers from the Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) intercepted a bus.
“A routine bus journey came to an abrupt end for one passenger after detectives from the Transnational Organized Crime Unit (TOCU) intercepted a Nairobi-bound bus and uncovered a stash of heroin worth approximately Sh1 million.
“Acting on a tip-off, the detectives mounted an operation along the Mombasa–Nairobi Highway at Taru, where they flagged down the bus for a search,” read the statement in part.
What initially appeared to be a routine passenger screening quickly turned into a major drug bust.
According to the DCI, detectives identified a passenger seated at Seat No. 29 and searched a brown bag that he was carrying.
The search led to the recovery of four sachets of heroin weighing a total of 300 grammes, with an estimated street value of Ksh1 million.

Officers also recovered Sh95,000 in cash, which investigators suspect to be proceeds of crime.
“Seated at Seat No. 29, the suspect was found in possession of a brown bag that concealed far more than personal belongings.
“Inside were four sachets of heroin weighing a total of 300 grammes, along with Sh95,000 in cash believed to be proceeds of crime,” DCI stated.
The suspect, identified as Brian Tabu Owuor, 38, was immediately arrested and taken into police custody, where he is being processed ahead of his arraignment in court.
The recovered narcotics and the cash have been detained as exhibits as detectives continue with investigations.
“The suspect, 38-year-old Brian Tabu Owuor, was immediately arrested and is currently in police custody undergoing processing pending arraignment.
“Meanwhile, the recovered heroin and the cash have been securely detained as exhibits as investigations gather pace,” the DCI added.
