An administration police officer has allegedly shot dead his partner before turning the gun on himself in Kimbimbi, Kirinyaga County.
The officer, who was attached to Mwea East Sub-County, lived with the woman in police quarters.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the officer fired five rounds. Four bullets struck the woman in the chest before he turned the weapon on himself, fatally shooting himself in the neck.
Mwea East Sub-County Police Commander Stephen Okal said the tragic incident came to light after fellow officers went to the officer’s house to collect firearms.
After receiving no response despite repeated knocks, they peered through a window and spotted the woman’s body, prompting them to force their way into the house.
When officers forced their way into the house, they found the 56-year-old AP officer lying dead in the sitting room.
Okal noted that the shooting may have gone unnoticed because the house is surrounded by dense trees and thick vegetation, which could have muffled the sound of the gunfire.
Mwea East Administration Police Commander Hassan said the officer’s relatives from Kiambu County and the woman’s family from Kirinyaga County had been informed of the incident.
The two bodies were moved to Kerugoya Hospital mortuary, where post-mortem examinations are expected to be conducted as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have launched investigations to establish the circumstances that led to the suspected murder-suicide.
“The two bodies have been moved to Kerugoya Hospital mortuary as detectives continue with investigations,” Okal added.
