President William Ruto on Tuesday bid farewell to the outgoing US ambassador to Kenya Meg Withman.
Ambassador Whitman visited President Ruto at State House Nairobi where they held talks before the US Envoy left.
In a statement after the meeting, President Ruto expressed his appreciation, saying Kenya and the United States have enjoyed robust diplomatic relations for 60 years.
“Kenya and the United States have enjoyed robust diplomatic relations for 60 years. These ties have been strengthened by our common and shared values of democracy, the rule of law, and freedom.
“In the past two years, our diplomatic ties have been elevated to the status of Major non-NATO ally, signifying a high point for the relations between our two countries and peoples. Bid farewell to outgoing US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman, State House, Nairobi. She has worked hard for the Kenya-United States partnership. For that, we are immensely grateful,” Ruto stated.
The meeting comes barely a week after Whitman tendered her resignation to outgoing US President Joe Biden.
In a statement, Whitman said it was an honor and privilege for her to serve the American people through strengthening the US partnership with Kenya.
“Today, I announced to my team at the U.S. embassy that I submitted my resignation to President Biden. It has been an honor and privilege to serve the American people through strengthening our partnership with Kenya. I am proud of leading a people-centered agenda that saves lives, increases security, and. creates economic opportunities for Kenyans and Americans,” read the statement in part.
Ambassador Whitman highlighted some of her achievements including the elevation of Kenya to be a major Non-Nato ally in sub-Saharan Africa.
“My efforts also opened the door for more American companies to do business in Kenya. When I arrived in 2022, I focused on expanding these ties with my “Why Africa, Why Kenya?” presentation to American companies and entrepreneurs.
