
President William Ruto congratulated Kenyan darts player David Munyua for his remarkable win in the first round of the Paddy Power World Darts Championship.
In a statement on Friday, December 19, President Ruto praised Munyua for his remarkable comeback victory over Belgium’s Mike De Decker at the iconic Alexandra Palace.
“Congratulations, David Munyua, on your remarkable victory in round one at the Paddy Power World Darts Championship.
“By defeating Belgium’s Mike De Decker, an established champion, with a fearless comeback from two sets down, you delivered one of the most memorable moments in the tournament’s history,” said Ruto.
The President noted that Munyua made history as the first Kenyan to compete in the PDC World Darts Championship in London.
“You have also made history for Kenya as the first Kenyan to compete in the PDC World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace in London, and announced your arrival on the global darts stage.
“As you advance to the next stage, know that the nation stands behind you. Bring the trophy home,” Ruto added.
Munyua, on Thursday, came from two sets down to defeat world number 18 De Decker 3-2 in a thrilling match at Alexandra Palace.
The 30-year-old had trailed the Belgian but made a comeback in the third and fourth sets before he took out a clutch 135 checkout on the bull in the final set to win the match.
The performance earned him widespread praise from fans and commentators, who labelled the match in the tournament as a thrilling encounter.
Munyua secured a place at the tournament after beating Cameron Carolissen in the final of the African Darts Group Championship qualifier.
The darts player who works full-time as a veterinarian in Kenya and has never travelled outside Africa before the World Championship.
