President William Ruto has made fresh changes within the Foreign Service.
In a communique on Wednesday, January 21, Head of Public Service Felix Koskei announced that President William Ruto has reassigned former CS Ababu Namwamba to be the High Commissioner of Kenya in Kampala, Uganda.
The Head of State moved Joash Maangi from his role as Kenya’s Ambassador to Uganda to a new posting as Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union.
Koskei explained the changes in foreign service were necessitated by vacancies arising from the completion of the terms of service of serving Ambassadors.
“His Excellency, the President, has this afternoon sanctioned changes within the nation’s Foreign Service. The changes are necessitated by vacancies arising from the completion of the terms of service of serving Ambassadors.
“By dint of this presidential action, the following serving Heads of Kenya’s missions abroad have been reassigned as stated: High Commissioner Kampala, Uganda Amb. Ababu Namwamba and Ambassador Brussels, Belgium & European Union Amb. Joash Maangi,” Koskei stated.

The Head of Public Service noted that the changes take effect immediately.
Namwamba has been serving as the Permanent Representative of Kenya to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
He was appointed to the position by President William Ruto after he was dismissed from the cabinet in 2024.
This comes a day after President Ruto officially dispatched a new cohort of Kenya’s ambassadors, high commissioners, and consuls-general.
In a statement after meeting the diplomats at State House, Nairobi, Ruto said the envoys carry with them the hopes, values, and aspirations of our nation.
“There is no greater honour in public service than the duty to represent one’s country at the international stage. Met and officially dispatched a number of Kenya’s ambassadors and high commissioners to their respective stations. The diplomats carry with them the hopes, values, and aspirations of our nation.
“They have an express mandate to foster mutually beneficial relations, safeguard our national interest, and faithfully represent the people of Kenya with dedication and steadfast commitment,” said Ruto.
