The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) has approved the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) decision to remove Senator Edwin Watenya Sifuna from the position of Secretary General.

In a letter dated Tursday July 9, 2026, addressed to the ODM Deputy Party Leader, National Chairperson and Executive Director, the Registrar confirmed that the changes had been effected after reviewing documents submitted by the party.

The Registrar of Political Parties, JC Lonionkou, noted that the Office found the removal to have complied with both the Political Parties Act and the ODM Constitution.

“Reference is made to the above subject matter and previous communication on the same, including your letter dated 8th July 2026 on the powers of the National Executive Committee to set up and determine the terms of reference for any committee.

“Upon review of the documents submitted by the party and the lack of response from Hon. Edwin Watenya Sifuna, we note that the removal of the party Secretary General was in line with the Political Parties Act Cap. 70 and the ODM party constitution,” read the statement in part.

The Registrar further indicated that the Office had effected the changes and updated the party’s official records to reflect its current leadership, effectively recognising the NEC’s decision for the official register.

“This Office has effected the change and updated the party records,’ the letter added.

This comes weeks after ODM National Executive Committee (NEC) resolved to remove Sifuna from the party’s Secretary General position.

In a statement, ODM said the NEC received and considered a report from the Internal Disputes Resolution Committee (IDRC), which had been constituted to hear and determine a complaint against Sifuna in his capacity as Secretary General.

The committee unanimously adopted the report and endorsed Sifuna’s removal from office. After reviewing the findings and recommendations.

“After going through the report and the findings of the IDRC under Article 74(2) of the Party constitution, the NEC unanimously resolved to adopt the Committee’s recommendations and endorsed the removal from office of Senator Edwin Watenya Sifuna. Effectively, Sen. Sifuna ceases to be the Secretary General of the ODM Party,” ODM stated.
