Impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s security has been reinstated by the government.
In a statement via X on Sunday, Kiambu Senator Karungo Wa Thang’wah announced that the state had reinstated part of Gachagua’s security detail.
The UDA senator went on to urge the state to also reinstate Gcahagua’s staff who were sent on compulsory leave following his impeachment.
“The state has reinstated part of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s security detail. In the same spirit, I urge the government to take the next honorable step and reinstate his employees as well. Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done,” Karungo stated.
This comes weeks after Gachagua’s security detail was withdrawn while seeking treatment at the Karen Hospital.
Addressing the media on Sunday last week, Gachagua criticized the government for taking away his security while he was hospitalized.
“It is very unfortunate that when I was here in the hospital my brother and my friend President William Ruto ordered the withdrawal of my security from the hospital here.
“He ordered the withdrawal of security guards in my rural home in Nyeri, in a private home in Karen, and officers close to me were disarmed and warned not to associate with me,” Gachagua remarked.
He also stated that his life was in danger following the removal of his security detail adding that President Ruto should be held responsible if anything occurred to him or his family.
“I want Kenyans to know that as I go home, I have no security. If anything happens to me or my family, President Ruto must be held accountable,” said Gachagua.
“The president in total violation of the court order viciously withdrew security around me.”
Gachagua was impeached on five out of 11 charges including gross violation of the constitution and stirring ethnic hatred, in a motion that was backed by opposition lawmakers and Ruto allies.
