Senior Police Officer Dies in Horrific Nine-Vehicle Accident on Nairobi-Nakuru Highway

A senior police officer is dead and several others injured after a devastating nine-vehicle pile-up tore through evening traffic at the Karai area along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway on Monday, June 15, 2026, turning a routine rush hour into a scene of chaos and grief.

The victim, Senior Superintendent of Police John Rioba, the County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) for Nyandarua, was driving his Isuzu D-Max when the crash struck at approximately 4:50 PM. He sustained critical injuries and was rushed to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

According to witnesses and police from Naivasha police station, the tragedy was triggered when a Sinotruk lorry travelling from Nairobi towards Nakuru lost control — with reports indicating brake failure — and rammed into a Toyota Land Cruiser moving in the same direction. The violent impact forced the Land Cruiser across lanes, where it cascaded into seven oncoming vehicles, setting off a chain-reaction crash involving lorries, matatus, private cars, and Rioba’s pickup.

Two European nationals who were passengers in the Toyota Land Cruiser escaped with minor injuries. Among the more seriously hurt is Regina Chumba, a Member of the County Assembly for Uasin Gishu, who complained of chest pains and was rushed to hospital for treatment.

In the pandemonium that followed the crash, a civilian recovered Rioba’s loaded Ceska pistol — carrying 15 rounds of ammunition — from the wreckage and handed it over to a police officer at the scene. All nine vehicles were extensively damaged and have since been towed to Naivasha Police Station pending inspection.

The driver of the Sinotruk lorry fled the scene immediately after the crash. Police have launched a manhunt for the fugitive driver as investigations into the precise cause of the collision continue.

The Karai disaster arrives against a deeply troubling backdrop. On Monday alone, police reported four additional fatalities in separate road accidents across the country, while the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) Director General Nashon Kondiwa disclosed that 2,150 lives have already been lost on Kenyan roads in 2026 — an 11 percent rise compared to the same period last year.

“We have 2,150 people who died on the roads this year, which is an increase of around 11 per cent from last year, and of these, around 836 are pedestrians,” Kondiwa said, adding that motorcyclists and drivers follow closely among the fatalities.

The crash renews urgent questions about highway safety standards, truck roadworthiness, and enforcement on one of Kenya’s busiest and most dangerous corridors.
