Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has raised concern over the disappearance of social media influencer Maverick Aoko.
Speaking on Wednesday, Sifuna noted that it is the responsibility of the police to protect Kenyans and their properties.
“Let us not sit here thinking that we are immune to this thing. Anybody can be plucked from the streets, blogger Maverick Aoko has not been found up to now, what sort of country is this,” Sifuna said.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino also joined Sifuna in demanding for the release of the social media commentator.
“Aoko has been missing for days…I have reached out to her family members and close friends, but no one knows where she is,” Babu said.
Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka on his part hit out at the Kenya Kwanza government over what he termed as State-sanctioned abductions and extrajudicial killings.
“Over the past three days, Maverick Aoko and Boniface Mwangi have been kidnapped from their houses. After being freed, Mwangi was accused of inciting others. It’s still unclear where Ms. Aoko is,” Kalonzo said.
Aoko’s aide in a post on Monday noted that Aoko had chosen to travel to the countryside and stay there. She only traveled to Nairobi for meetings and to attend court in a case where she is being charged of publishing false information.
Aoko traveled back to Nairobi two weeks ago to find her home vandalized, with her caretaker reportedly telling her of strange men hovering around asking about her whereabouts.
According to the aide, Aoko also gave an interview to international media about her arrest ordeal and continued threats. Following the interview, the controversial social media influencer has never been seen.
“She was interviewed by AFP about her arrest ordeal & continued threats. After her tweet on Mr. ‘F’, she went incognito, which we (family & friends) thought it normal, perhaps she just wanted to confuse enemies.
“We still don’t know her whereabouts. Whom do we report to? Same police who told her lawyers point-blank, ‘we are coming for her.’ If they took her, we’re asking that they produce her, if she is hiding, we pray that she is safe and will reach out in whatever discreet way just so we can all have peace of mind,” Aoko’s aide stated.
