A 29-year-old Taiwanese national has been arrested at the Isebania One Stop Border Post (OSBP) in Migori County after authorities intercepted suspected heroin concealed in his luggage while attempting to enter Kenya from Tanzania.
In a statement, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspect, identified as Wang Hsiang-hui, was flagged during a routine security screening by the Anti-Narcotics Unit (ANU) detectives and K9 handlers.
According to the DCI, the breakthrough came when a trained detection dog alerted officers to a suspicious package hidden inside one of the traveler’s bags.
“Wang Hsiang-hui, a 29-year-old Taiwanese national, was making his entry into the country from neighbouring Tanzania, blissfully unaware that Kenya’s border security apparatus leaves zero room for drug cartels.
“His journey hit a dead end during a routine security check when a vigilant detection dog caught a whiff of trouble, freezing beside a bag and signalling a positive hit on a suspicious package concealed inside,” the statement read in part.
ANU detectives immediately conducted a thorough search, uncovering 26 carefully wrapped capsules containing a brown powdery substance weighing approximately 18.26 grams. Preliminary field tests positively identified the substance as heroin.
Wang was arrested at the scene and taken into police custody, where he is being processed ahead of his arraignment in court. The suspected narcotics have been secured as exhibits for further investigations.
The DCI said the interception highlights the effectiveness of security measures at Kenya’s border points in disrupting cross-border drug trafficking networks.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations remains steadfast in its fight against drug trafficking and other transnational crimes, working closely with partner agencies to safeguard Kenya’s borders and protect communities from the devastating effects of narcotic drugs,” DCI said.
