Tharaka Nithi Governor Onesmus Muthomi Njuki has been appointed the new Vice Chairperson of Council of Governors (CoG) , taking over from Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, who resigned on October 22 following public backlash over controversial remarks regarding the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The announcement, made on November 19, 2025, places Governor Njuki in a key position within the council, which plays a central role in coordinating intergovernmental relations, devolution, and county development funding.
Speaking after his appointment, Njuki expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him, stating, “My esteemed colleagues, fellow governors, it is with a heart full of profound gratitude and deep humility that I accept the immense trust you have placed in me to serve as the Vice-Chairperson of this distinguished body. I pledge to uphold the integrity of the office and work collaboratively to advance the agenda of the Council.”
Governor Njuki had been serving as CoG Chief Whip since October 6, a role immediately below the Vice Chair, and previously chaired the CoG Health Committee, bringing substantial leadership experience to his new role. Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi has now assumed Njuki’s former position as Chief Whip.
Kahiga’s resignation followed a vote of no confidence by the council and intense public criticism over remarks deemed insensitive regarding the passing of Raila Odinga. His departure triggered a leadership vacuum that Njuki’s appointment now fills, stabilizing the council and restoring confidence in its governance.
Political analysts say Njuki’s elevation signals an effort to consolidate leadership and maintain continuity at a time when CoG is addressing critical national issues. “Njuki brings experience, credibility, and a collaborative approach, which is crucial for maintaining coherence among Kenya’s counties,” said Dr. Lydia Mwikali, a governance expert at the University of Nairobi.
This leadership change underscores the dynamic nature of Kenya’s devolved political landscape and sets the stage for renewed focus on effective governance and county development. Njuki’s ascent is seen as a stabilizing move for CoG following the recent political turbulence.
