The University of Nairobi (UoN) has once again asserted its dominance in Kenya’s higher education landscape, surpassing Kenyatta University (KU) in the prestigious UNIRANKS 2026 World University Rankings.
This significant achievement sees UoN not only retain its position as Kenya’s top-ranked university but also earn the coveted “Elite University” status, a recognition reserved for institutions demonstrating exceptional academic excellence, student outcomes, and institutional impact.
The latest results from UNIRANKS, a global ranking body, place the University of Nairobi 952nd globally and 14th in Africa.
This makes UoN the only Kenyan university to break into the global top 1,000, scoring an impressive 77.35 and earning the UNIRANKS Platinum Award.
“In the UNIRANKS 2026 Rankings, Kenya stands out with 47 verified universities, of which 8 are ranked as Top by Country, 6 as Top by Region, and 1 have earned the prestigious Elite University status,” read part of the ranking report.
Established in 1970, UoN has consistently been recognized for its commitment to research output, academic breadth, and community engagement, offering a wide array of programs across medicine, engineering, law, social sciences, education, agriculture, and technology.
This latest ranking underscores UoN’s strong research output, international collaborations, and significant contribution to Kenya’s development agenda.
In contrast, Kenyatta University, while recognized for its diverse academic programs and research initiatives, achieved a global rank of 2015 with a score of 66.89 in the UNIRANKS 2026 report.
However, it is important to note that other ranking bodies present a different picture. For instance, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2026, released on October 9, 2025, placed Kenyatta University above UoN for the second consecutive year.
In this ranking, Kenyatta University topped locally, followed by UoN, with Egerton University and Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology coming third and fourth, respectively.
Kenyatta University reportedly surpassed UoN in key indicators such as good health and well-being, quality of learning experience, financial stability, and research excellence in the Times Higher Education assessment.
Despite varying outcomes across different ranking methodologies, UoN’s achievement of “Elite University” status in the UNIRANKS 2026 is a significant milestone for Kenyan higher education, highlighting its consistent pursuit of academic excellence and global visibility.
